To enhance the speed and reliability of your Business Wi-Fi, there are several steps you can take:
Selecting the optimal location for your modem or Wi-Fi 6 Pod
The placement of your modem can impact your Wi-Fi signal quality, as obstacles like walls and furniture can interfere with the signal. Here are some tips to optimize your signal strength:
- If possible, place your modem near the area where you use Wi-Fi the most frequently.
- Place your modem in an open area, avoiding cabinets, closets, and any obstruction by furniture.
- Avoid placing your modem near other electronic devices that are not related to your Wi-Fi setup.
Tips for optimizing your devices:
- The speed of your Wi-Fi is distributed among all the devices connected in your business. To optimize your speed, consider turning off Wi-Fi or going offline when a device is not in use.
- If you experience slow speeds on a single device, try restarting it. This action will close all running applications and reset the Wi-Fi connection, potentially resolving the issue.
- If a device provides the option to choose between 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies, experiment with both to determine which one delivers the optimal performance for your needs.
Refer to this chart to determine the signal strength of your devices:
- Excellent(> -50 dBm)
- Good(-50 to -60 dBm)
- Fair(-60 to -70 dBm)
- Weak(< -70 dBm)
Rebooting your modem by turning it off and then on again can help reset and improve the strength of your Wi-Fi connection.
Running a Speed Test
Performing a speed test can assist in identifying any potential speed or Wi-Fi issues that may be affecting your Business Wi-Fi connection.
Follow these steps to conduct a test:
- For optimal results, it is recommended to connect your computer directly to your modem using an ethernet cable.
- If your computer does not have an ethernet port or if you don't have an ethernet cable available, you can still conduct a speed test using Wi-Fi. However, please note that the results may not be as precise as when using an ethernet connection.
Performing a speed test
- Go to http://www.speedtest.net
- Click on Change Server.
- If you live anywhere in Ontario type in Toronto and then choose one of the top three server results.
- If you live anywhere in Quebec type in Montreal, and choose one of the top three server results.
- Click GO to begin your test.
- You will see your results in about a minute
If you connected directly to your modem with an ethernet cable, your download speed should be similar to your Primus Business Internet plan (e.g. 75 Mbps or 150 Mbps).
If you did our test using Wi-Fi, the results may vary due to the distance to your router, the location of your router, and the number of devices currently connected.
